I recently had a conversation which I have not had in a long time. It’s a subject that I am well acquainted with and struggled with in the early days of my faith. But that was many years ago and I havn’t given much thought to the matter since. The question that was posed to me (in the form of a forceful statement) is do we still have a sin nature?
Good question… and depending on who you ask the answer you receive back will be wildly varied. Now, my own faith-history is that I grew up in the baptist church, moved into EV Free, AG and now I’m a non-denominational river-rat meaning – I don’t subscribe to denominational titles as long as the river’s running through. The point is that in each of those settings I heard, saw and lived a completely different reality in regards to the question above.
So I dug into the only place I know to find truth, the bible… and I’m debating if I should share my thoughts here or not. I’m tempted to give my findings away but on the other hand, I feel that I’d be doing you (the reader) a huge disservice by depriving you of the opportunity to sit with Holy Spirit and read the word.
So… I will share my thoughts and findings with you, but not today. I’ll share them later in the week. In the meantime, this is your job – to crack open your bible and seek out an answer. Please notice that I didn’t say to ask you pastor (though I’m sure he’s a great guy), or go through your old sermon notes. What I’m asking you to do is to see what God says about it through Jesus and the apostles. Do it… it’ll be awesome.
And we’ll compare notes in a few days.
